It sounds like there must be a process of determining someones angle. reading between the lines or stalking.

This indeed does seem to be the dilemma faced , perhaps the nagual did have to hook potential apprentices .
And when you refer to zen type enlightenment we also see this as a means to an end to it i imagine , however for some there might be something else , like an inkling to give and receive at a mutually running timespace , kind of like a family which forms outside of itself and could not have imagined its natural motion to act as a unit.
and yet would come together and remember .
This would feel as though their are two selves running of course possibly , one that is usual and plainly droning , and one unusual , one voice decisive , one voice indecisive , and the paradox being the one that seems decisive may be interpreted as "crazy" in its unusual nature and knowing.
The essential component which would discover its call to being may simply be , the thrill of development of a shared heart space , whereby being pushed beyond the limits of the ordinary self to unfold as much of the puzzle is possible . and the joy being the perfection of human beings who live it breath it and push it and share it.
this is my own individual point of view , and i do not assume it to represent others of traditional , except i personally, ideally push it to perfection only . Without a pefection
we see energy struggle . And it is called , realising the great perfection. blah di blah.

in newage parlance- soul-groups contract/agreements...
if certain groups (parties) are destined to form, it could be pre-arranged by the 'Doubles' of the individuals that may make up the party... of course there is free-will so you may get the possibility of certain individuals rejecting this 'destiny' (as well as rejecting the plans of the Double)

I reread your question , and the response changed as did the interpretation for me , i think that in itself , is also pointing to something .
It is as though the path forms beneath us , and it is not permanent , having lost self importance ,
even momentarily , something else takes over , an ability to give curtesy to power which becomes reciprocated as in being " a servant of spirit" , the side being that when we expect nothing we begin to get something . Opening conduits for spirit .
That the double dreams us as we dream it. so they say.

Other times I See what you are saying - 'doubles' are working together in the 2nd attention or dream realms.
It seems so out of the box in a way that is a threat to sanity and reason.
I feel called to empower my controlled folly (shield) in tonal - grounding is needed or the storm of nagual/spirit will blow you away.
