Toltec beliefs state that it is known that awareness increases as life increases. Thus the longer you live the more awareness you take in.

as neural nets interconnect, it would make sense reactive or active awareness would grow but potentional would stay the same.

I would take it to mean "awareness increases to the degree that one becomes more alive" if one does become more alive. Many people become less alive as their sojourn on Earth progresses. They incrementally shut down.
I don't see how awareness could just organically and automatically expand with time, and my observations bear this out.

The old seers believe that the creating force that they refer to as the eagle creates life and thus awareness to feed on once the life is given up. They believe that we are the eagle's food and our awareness is what is on the plate.
By recapping before the eagle it is thought to satifly its demand and thus letting the warrior live.
Paradise Child's comment would perhaps mean that a younger death would have better awareness for the eagle to feed on then?

Mine certainly does. I can't speak for anyone else.
I think using "Death as an advisor' has a lot to do with it. It certainly broadens your awareness of other's motivations. It becomes very apparent what makes them "tick".
Lives spent just looking at the "outside" of things rather than the invisible/eternal things seem to lack depth. A life like that would seem almost pointless to me.
But to each his own.
