Recapitulation exercise - Julio Juliopolis - 06-21-2013

Something I naturally did as a child, and some of you may have as well, was to mentally review my day every night after I was sent to bed while waiting to fall asleep. I would run though everything I'd done from when I got up until then, and review the basic sequence of events. I woke up at 6, watched 2 episodes of Batman, ate pancakes for breakfast from 7:00 until about 7:45, played stuffed animals with my brother and sister, then we went out and played tag. Came in for lunch, while eating looked at clock to see it was 12:32, etc. While I was doing this, I would visualize the events, reliving parts of them in my head. Doing this every night I got very good at it, and could even relive pretty much the entire episodes of Batman almost word for word which I'd seen first thing upon awakening that morning. I didn't usually choose to do that though, generally focusing instead on reliving those moments which were emotionally impactful for me. However, when going through the days itinerary, I would "remember", (as in bring to that spot in memory where it's ready to access immediately even if I'm not accessing it now), close to the entire episode, without actually reliving the experience of it, or thinking through the entire dialogue.

This habit wasn't done out of a desire to become a sorceror or anything like that, I just had an early bedtime and was killing time until I was tired enough to fall asleep. So naturally I didn't take the next step and try to regain my energy from these events while releasing other people's energy from them; although I do think I did some of that naturally and unconsciously. Had I made a conscious effort to do so it would have been very easy at that point. Unfortunately I abandoned this habit as a teenager when I was more able to choose my own bedtime and so waited until I was just about to fall asleep before laying down.

Thinking back on this, I've decided to try and start this up again and thought I might suggest to others here to consider creating this habit in yourselves. Go to bed 30 minutes or so before you get tired and review your day, remembering everything you can about it. Then try and picture everything you did in your mind and attempt to relive it. As you do so, recapitulate each event. With practice, I imagine it will come easier and you will get better at it, (and you'll find your memory improving a lot as a side bonus). At first you may only be able to recap in words the basics of your day, but I'm confident you will improve. Doing this every day will make recapitulation a managable chore, (instead of always trying to do huge chunks of your life at a time), and when you're done you will be free from your daily worries with all that energy gained back just in time to work on your dreaming. Also, this will keep your recapitulation homework from continuing to pile up on you.

Good luck in your continuing searches for freedom!

Nice encouragement Julio! I'm sure you are reaping the benefits of your consistent, disciplined approach

I've never regretted recapitulating before going to sleep lol. Not once!
