I find myself coming back and watching this video from time to time.
I feel like, when he is looking through the camera, and parts of his life flash by, he is identifying with me and the images in my life, although the images may be different, the empathy is there.
I feel a remarkable strong connection to this old man...
I feel he is advising me. He is saying in essence that life is short, you see here how I have acquired all this fame, wealth, notoriety, it is meaningless. I could have let it all go, I could have done things differently, but you are someone else, it can be different for you; you still have a chance, but I am already dead, and all that remains is an empire of dirt.

this made an impression on me too..
2 parts stuck with me most:
"broken thoughts I cannot repair" ~ this mirrors his admission of defeat imo. maybe not in the song specifically, but to me it shows he is defeated.
if I could start again... (I would keep myself) I would find a way ~ I wonder if people given a second go at things would really find a way..

This might be some subliminal reference to reaching the 3rd attention. He would recapitulate next time around, so he could keep himself (his consciousness) at the moment of death. OR not let who or what he truly is get lost or diluted in the empire of dirt.
