So these are the scales of Maat.  When you die you queue up at these scales and then... looks like Anpu/Anubis up there weighing your HEART against the feather of Maat.  The feather represents truth, justice, cosmos, and so on, and if your HEART is lighter than the feather, then you...  I'm not actually sure what happens next, but it's GOOD. 

If your HEART is heavier than the feather then the standard procedure is to feed it to crocodile demons, I think.
