I don't remember about the death defiler in the books thought as you relate to energy stealing, this correspond to my understanding of such beings: some sort of vampyres.
I may have something to share about this energy stealing features of theses death defiler and may be feature too (?!) of theses immortal warrior:
Let's say a river is pretty pure from it's source to it's end, and this is well like this... Anyway one can burry some water in it and eventually it may even tolerate a little bit of piss or wastes... It would not suffice to alter it's purity.
Let's say this river, one day, become the receptacle of another river, a poisonous one, so poisonous that the meet of the two rivers, make the big and pure one poisonned and even poisonous on it's own self.
Anyway, let's go to point: if a species of immortal warrior, very tolerant to such poison happens to come by the conjonction of the two "ennemies" rivers (ennemies because the little is poisonning the purity of the big one) and start to drink, and to drink and to drink... May be it will happens that the big river will be less poisonned to a point that even it's purity will be manifested again.
The point as you could have already understood is not about drinking but where the drink is made... If it were on the big river, it would neither dilute it's poison, neither helps it "regain" it's purity... It would only give it a quite normal merit for a river: "only" being drink by somes and others...
Whereas drinking at the little river give it merit and helps the big river.
So the point is about understanding, knowledge and hitting the good point.
That is quite a dark skill of some Shamans i know (may be of the historical Naguals too ) but this has been present in many traditions: sins eaters for example and this too is also present in magnetism where the practiciant would extract "bad" energy (at least "bad" for the patient) and eventually throw it away... Ahahah i hope such a practiciant would not throw such "bad" energy in a river...
So energy stealing a bad thing or a way to render a phenomen which like so many phenomens can be badly used without proper understand and knowledge ?
