Yes, but from personal experience, in a minor natural disaster, I didn't see ANY STORES accepting gold as payment OR CREDIT CARDS! Nothing over a 20 dollar bill was being accepted. That being the case you wouldn't be able to spend your gold. You would have to exchange it for something considered more valuable: MONEY. Chances are in such a situation gold would devalue so far down you'd practically be giving it away!
