Losses in revenue for major pharmaceutical companies will be tremendous, with projections showing the pharmaceutical industry will lose upwards to $127 billion in brand spending by 2016 due to patent expiration and cheaper generics in the market.

At present, drug companies are forced to sell drugs to Medicaid at the lowest price they charge private insurance plans — or at a 23.1-percent discount from the average price. Extending the provision to Medicare would deprive pharmaceutical companies of $123 billion.
