I have learned much from the Castaneda series and other connected information.
One of those is that I have become skeptical of claims made by traditional anthropology. There has been a cultural bias through the centuries that dismissed native legend , for instance (there are a few cases where legend has been affirmed by more recent study. One was about whale remains in a cave of the desert in Utah or maybe Arizona. I don't have it in front of me. From learned indigenous writers, I found that the role of women in American village societies has been distorted if not entirely discounted. It wasn't always just about the war chiefs. Australia has been even more misrepresented.
For Indians , as well as myself, the act of Controlled Folly is especially important. As we must live in this culture, the trick is to hang on to spirit and not be 'sucked-in' , like Indians today who are more like cowboys. At the same time, on must have a 'survival face' that the world sees so as not to become prey. Very complicated. I don't have television feeding me much, anymore. The commercials and lifestyle propaganda seem foreign to me now. That's a start.
