From my own relative perspective and understanding .... here is where we do run into the boundary between so called "indigenous" and "non-indigenous" peoples.
For indigenous people Totems are not something you choose to have or not ... at free will .... for they already exist in indigenous people's "energy body" ....as "patterns"...
They are something, that has been "instilled" in you ..... long ago .... and you are born into that legacy or inheritance.
"Indigenous people" cannot escape their "patterning" ... nor can "non-indigenous" people.
It just seems to me that "non-indigenous" people are not aware of their own "patternings" taking them for granted.
Poutnik, you said to me before, that your Totem is Wolf, but you are not a Wolf !
Indigenous perspective is different ... in them you are your Totem.
The human group or individual vibrates the same "key" as that of it's Totem. The octave is different, but the key is the same.
To build "personal power" a person aligns with his/her Totem.
But you are right .... Something for Something !
Totemic people are "patterned" to have "Spirit of The Power of Interconnectedness" as their "fate".
Long story ... goes way back to hunting and gathering days ....

The same goes for "Taming Allies" .... Something for something .... you choose the "what" something ... for "what" something ...
Organic or Inorganic ....
I guess both can be equally "empowering" or catastrophic.
In either case, the only integrity of impeccability you can truly trust is that of your own.
Thus "Faking it" never works.
