I met a coyote once. Fortunately, I did not panic, just stared at him and then ran him off. He was hungry. Both under the 'influence' and sober, pets
have communicated to me; feelings are translated to thoughts in my mind. In this same way, seven hawks came to me two summers ago. They circled me not more
than 100 feet above. I thought their chief (or Nagual) would have come to me, but as I did not have a falconer's cuff, they said their good byes. When this
happened, I was in a very clear, silent mind. I think that is the key to such events.
If I have this correctly, animism is the view that all creatures are the equal of man, different but equal, with as much right to be here as you or I. This can
even be extended to plants and soil. The Earth itself is a living being. I have learned that the most radical of environmentalists have taken this position
over the past 50 years. They call it Deep Ecology. Not man apart. The Hindus say, that, more than sympathy with the mountain, I AM the mountain.
