If someone is saying something intelligent then suddenly slaps you in the face what are you going to react to? The intelligent comment or the slap?
It depends on how hungry I was for the intelligent comment.
There are stories of those who have had great revealtions from near fatal car accidents...what they valued was what was revealed and tend to express gratidude for the accident, so it is hard to say.
You are looking for something that you feel you are not finding...something is amiss. How can one get to the root of that? Maybe it was, as you say, because you were insulting people that caused them to shut down their thinking. Maybe it was that their thinking was shut down to begin with and they find your insulting a good excuse to excuse their laziness. Maybe it had nothing to do with either possibility. It is hard to say...and we can ponder why for an eternity and still get no closer to you finding intelligent conversation.
You said you wanted something that would make you think. Maybe people are offering you plenty to think about and you are not seeing these as opportunities. Maybe if you looked at the responses in a different way you might see some things you didn't see before?
Going back to the point I have raised at SR and here, many post only complaints...SeeSaw raised a point about posts lacking something here. I recognize this feeling these people are describing in these different ways...I call it dissatisfaction. It is what many felt in life before they embarked on their path of spiritual growth. It is a generalized feeling...something missing, the desire for something more, something else...and it is a recognition that things are not right, are amiss somehow, a general discomfort. In my opinion, it is the way one recognizes that they have stepped off their path...a sign post. It seems to me that many are feeling this way. If this theory of mine were true, then no amount of anything intelligent said in these posts would make any difference to you because it isn't really about that...but instead a spirit poke in the side to prop you back on your path...and that you will remain dissatisfied until you are back on your path. Who's to say...it's just a theory.
I am sorry that you are unhappy, and glad that you are learning something from it.
