I am still piecing this together, and by no means think that I know what I am talking about. Only that I have seen and experienced some things in the past That seem to fit into more than one system of thought.
the bible and the Kabalah have long been linked together. The Kabalah, the study of the "Tree of Life" began to be written down much later than the Bible. It was commentaries upon the Scriptures past on by word of mouth and then written down much later.
Anyway, I see some parallels which may or may not "hold water", so to speak. But these are the things that jump out at me.
Jacob (The Supplanter or Following After the Lord), the Father of the twelve, (Joseph and his brothers) had many one on one expeiences with God and Angels. Each time, his name was changed for a time to Israel (Who is as God or Power with God.)
One of these experiences is seeing a Ladder that reached from heaven to earth. upon this Ladder were angels ascending and descending. At that point in time, he had an awareness, and said; "surely God is in this place and I knew it not."
This is an awareness of God being HERE, NOW..! Wherever we happen to be.
Now in the Kabbalah, the "Tree of Life" is sometimes referred to as "Jacobs Ladder" or "The Ladder of Lights".
THIS is what, I believe, is what Jacob gave to his son Joseph. Jacob being one "generation" of understanding and Joseph being the next "generation". Both are us. Just, hopefully a bit further along the path. We build upon where we have gone before. That is the meaning of the coat being a gift from father to son. But also, the "Father" refers o the Gift originating with the "Father" in Heaven, the Creator, or Nagual, Power, etc.
The lights are the "beams of light" and the "angels" are the flames that dance among the beams.
So, in essence, the Coat of many colors is a vision of the "Tree of Life", one of the "Great Bands of Emanations", "Jacob's Ladder", and the "ladder of Lights".
By the way, the ten "Sephiroth" upon the Tree are referred to as "Emanations". They donote the ten powers of God.
The twelve "sheaves", or stacks of wheat or straw, in Joseph's dream I see as the "Luminous Eggs" made of light fibers of the brothers.
Joseph's "sheave" stood upright. Joseph's "sheave" was clothed in a "Coat of Many Colors", which was given to him by his "Father".
Joseph is that faculty within us that first steps into the "Spiritual Realm". The other "faculties" do not trust Joseph at first. But eventually the Father brings them together.
They all must eventually learn to trust the "forerunner" Joseph; he who was "separate from his bretheren". And eventually will, because the Father means for this to happen. When the dream of the reunion of the brothers is fulfilled, The brother's "eyes are opened",.. and they realize that it is indeed Joseph standing over them as ruler of the known world.
Josephs comment to his brothers is; "..be not greived or angry with yourselves, that you sold me hither; for God did send me before you..."
He also said "you meant it for evil, but God meant it for good."
What I get out of this is that there is a plan and reasons for the things we go through, even when we can't see it. And that we should excecise patience and faith that we are bound for something. Travelers who will eventually reach our destination.
