Where don Juan evoked Death as an entity to aid in reordering the Tonal , and as a guide on the Warriors Path , the Nazis , and the Spanish conquest no doubt,
seemed to use Death as if it were a captured ally , for the purposes of their 'sorcery'.
Could this type of confrontation with a Petty Tyrant be the source of the New Seers methods? Frankl's book describes many mental effects upon the camp
prisoners that were so similar to , though not in intensity, the methods used upon Castaneda, with similar results in refining his purpose and acts. These
prisoners lived with death 24-7 for years , and death could come at any time for no reason at all.
An interesting side-effect that Frankl noted was Apathy ie: if one is to die anyway, why care. He cited 'having a purpose (right out of don Juan!) '
as the overriding attitude among the survivors of the camps. It puzzles me that people who do not face such threatening circumstances become Apathetic as a
way of life.
