I see it something similar to that also.
Two forces or motivations in us...one that is true which all people have and one that allows for intents that are false...or not true to our nature. We are given these intents from everyone around us. The importance of going to school to get good grades and earn lots of money as given to us by our parents. The importance of conforming as given to us by our teachers. The importance of fitting in as given to us by our peers. None of these other intents have anything to do with our true natures.
The true nature of people has its own force and tries to shine through despite obsticals. Like the old lady with all the cats. Our true nature motivates us...and we motivate ourselves with the intents given to us by others. These two are in conflict until one can begin to grasp their own true nature. The effort to grasp ones own nature isnt found by looking at others natures...or by taking on their intents.
I believe that Castaneda was just a man and his books were just books. His followers subjugated their own power to view him as more powerful than they were. The power they gave him corrupted him as it would corrupt any man (or woman). He became corrupted.
I believe his followers were also just people...that in a group are subject to the Genovese Effect.
I believe that both of these pathologies are deeply ingrained in the human psyche and that it takes a tremendous effort to identify it, to deal with it objectively and to override it.
Although it will make me unpopular with anti-cultists who believe that they were victims...I believe that they both fed each other...and that it is a vicious cycle.

Imo anything that detracts one from their true nature is ones personal challenge to overcome.
