if i know correctly, the flayers are just one item in a procession of parasites (in contradiction to honest hunters)- IBs, ghosts and demons and others.
they never been such a general phenomena as DJ introduced them - make sense... if you are infected in them, you can't as far as think about them uninterrupted; if you are infected by someone else, quite similar but else - you have a better chance to grasp the idea.
