One of the key elements of defeating the FI is to realize that a lot of what we think are our own ideas, really aren't. That may seem fundamental to most here, but it as a huge eye-opener for me during the time when I was sorting out mySelf from the FI's matrix.
Another thing for me has been to really understand that the FI isn't an entity as much as it is a gestalt - a hive-mind comprised of all the belief systems of Man, stretching throughout all of time, both past and future. That being the case, when we say the FI has an agenda, it might be more accurate to say the FI is a reflection of Man's agenda - not the higher or better agendas of Man, but the maintenance of the status quo. Humans are herd animals, meaning they want to be liked and accepted by their fellow humans, and they will go to great lengths to achieve that status, including adopting "foreign" beliefs and, as your mother may have said, jumping off a bridge just because your friends are doing it. In that regard, the foreign installation is like a blueprint for what is considered normal or right or wrong - but in reality the blueprint itself is drawn from false beliefs, and so is flawed at the most core level.
How to shake off the FI? Question everything you believe, and don't believe everything you think. Ask yourself not so much WHAT you believe, but when you encounter a firmy held belief system, ask yourself WHY you believe it.
Of course... that's when the FI starts throwing anvils at your head, but that's another story altogether.
