One of my teacher's, Krishnamurti used to spend much of his day paralyzed in a crucifying agony of what he called "the Process".
Other great saints have similar kinds of experiences, one was Ramakrishna.
I am not sure exactly what "the process" was. But I theorize that out of compassion and empathy he was taking part of the universal suffering on
himself.
He journaled about it and the collected writings are published as "Krishnamurti's Journal.
