You may want to go back and re-read that. It may be so but it may also be that that is how Carlos remembered the converstation. Either way, I dissagree. You do not have to think you are better off to feel compassion. But it helps to have been "in the shoes" of the person you are having compassion for.
Compassion is a "feeling with" another person. Not a "looking down" on them. I can feel compassion for someone who has lost a loved one because I have lost loved ones and know how it feels.

I can feel better off than them in the respect that I have lived through it while they may still be in mourning.
You are "better off" having lived through difficulties than someone who is still experiencing them.
You are not better than them.
