Death as an Advisor
#1
~All you have is this window of dreamstate tonal being which
can slam shut at any moment. The question is, what are you going to do with it?
Once you come to deeply appreciate this question, your life goes into a kind of
cascade meltdown. Everything in your life gets dropped except your life itself.
Then the game is on and all this stuff starts making sense.

That's when you find out what it really means to think, and
why most people never do. That's when you begin to see what it means to be
asleep, and that virtually everyone is. That's when you begin to see what it
means to say that people are all children, and insane children at that. That's
when you begin to see that all emotions are energetic attachments and that they
all stem from fear. That's when you begin to see self importance and ego and
delusion and understand who and what these are and where they dwell and how it
works. That's when you begin to see that nothing is wrong, that wrongness isn't
possible and that the wrongest thing you can think of is no less right than the
tightest thing you can think of. That's when all these seemingly contradictory
statements stop being paradoxical concepts and start being the most simple and obvious
of observations.

And that's when you're going to want to be able to focus
yourself like a laser, and that requires thinking processes like recapitulation
or death as an advisor. That's what it takes to succeed in an enterprise where
failure and mediocrity are so celebrated that no one remembers what success
looks like.

No one's saying this stuff is easy. Actual progress is never
easy. It will tear your life all to hell, and that’s just the beginning. You
don’t make pretty sand mandalas and sweep them away to remind yourself of your
impermanence. You don’t try to figure out what your face looked like before you
were born. You don’t notice shiny things to enhance your awareness or count the
number of times you pass through a doorway. Maybe all you need is to lower your
defenses, a little at a time, over the course of a couple of years, like a slow
dying. But fast or slow, that's what it is: a dying. And what does all that
amount to?

What do you get for all that suffering and disillusionment? Salvation?
Liberation? Nirvana? Freedom? No. it just gets you back to square one.

It gets you back to the point where you went vertical
instead of horizontal, where you burrowed in at the age of ten or twelve. It
gets you out of the hole you've spent your life digging yourself into so you
can finally start your life. We're not even talking about taking a spiritual
journey at this point, we're talking about undoing the unspiritual journey.

We spend our lives burrowing down into our own graves, like
that's a clever place to hide from death. This is about climbing out of our
graves and living our lives and discovering who and where we are and what we
are a part of, and you can't do that from the bottom of a hole.
