I love the ashes in the driveway ritual you came up with, it does sound powerful. That fireplace of yours would have sold me on the house too!
I don't see what other peoples problem with ritual is, it is just a tool to use, how I use it is to ask my double how to see something or do something and I know how to proceed, it is a tool not an obsession. It is just like when I am making art, I know what I want to do, then it comes to me what material to use, I don't get obsessed with the materials or the method.
