At least it's about Brown Dwarfs, and it seems to explain why this may be a reality for us. They may not be all that uncommon.
Which reminds me of a dream, of course. One of the things that happened during my Seven Gates journeys. It was during a part in which I was once again dealing with the beings who run The Ship. Used to have a wife and two kids up there (well, multiple wives, this is the one I remember best, long story best left untold).
After getting to the point I'm left with this: I'm standing in somebody's back yard in Seattle, Washington, and I am part of a crew of magical technicians who have set up a crystal grid composed of four large crystals of clear quartz set up on tripods like telescopes. I'm standing in the center of the yard at the axis of the wheel they form, a Medicine Wheel pattern again, and they are aimed skyward at an angle which would cause them to intersect infinitely far away.
I look up into the sky and suddenly I see all the things I could not see before, all the things that are not stars as well as the things that are. The sky is not empty, it is filled with dark shapes, rogue planets and clouds of gas and dark stars, they actually far outnumber the stars in the sky and some of them are not very far away at all. For a moment I see the universe as it really is, those strange things and the ships that are plying the distances between them, and then the techs are taking down the crystal grid and pretty soon I'm standing there alone looking up at a night sky filled with stars and wondering.
So I did some checking around later on and found that there are theories that most of the matter in the universe is dark matter like the things I had seen, that the visible universe does not add up to enough mass to explain things like the Big Bang. A huge amount of what would be there if our understanding is correct is missing. So maybe it isn't, maybe it's there.
Every day I drive through slashes in the bedrock where the new highway was blasted, and I see the little line of oddly colored clay that marks the time the dinosaurs vanished, and I see all the layers of ocean sediment that were put down in the millions of years since, now turned to stone that was in the way of traffic. I see the small layers in all of that, and I know they mark changes that no one is talking about and no one wants to admit. The evidence that ours is an unstable and dangerous planet is all around us. Life has learned to adapt, every time we get hit things change and life comes back stronger than ever. But civilizations haven't learned to deal with this problem. That's why our known history goes back only two or three thousand years, but fossil skulls of horses have been found in the bedrock of Europe that show tooth wear patterns from metal bridal bits. We've had ups and downs before.
