In short:
Path to enlightenment is long and hard, it takes humility and enormous sobriety. Many (most actually) don't walk it all the way... but they say the did.

PS1: I understand it... Aurobindo didn't have power-of-synthesis. All his works are that way.
PS2: This relates to the nagual search for freedom of the spirit, but from another perspective, of course.
