maybe that tone is what they feel either allows their spirit to travel to the dreamtime...or allows spirit to communicate with them. i lived in australia for over two years and there is remarkable difference between the tribes and what they believe about the didj....i believe the general opinion is that 'the spirit' lives in the didj.
Some tribes do not teach women to play, because of the stress on 'womb energy' and the belief it houses the male spirit and, some do teach their women to play.
this is only what i picked up while over there..no definitive answers here...
however i do know it has powerful effects when used as a tool for sound healing when played over the body, in the energy field....my experience is that it loosens the energy or dream body to journey or consciously 'dream'....nice!
