I think what you're probably missing is you need belief to function in society and get along with other people. People like to know what you stand for, even if they disagree. They're less afraid of their exact opposite than they are of the totally unknown.
What's scary is you can't just take on characters, you have to take on beliefs as well.
Listen, I manage a Communist twitter and I EVENTUALLY have great conversations with anybody, because they KNOW. They think I'm something terrible, but I'm SOMETHING and we can talk about that.
