So, now I'm imagining a GIANT helicopter, and either it's flying through the void, OR it is SO BIG it actually IS the void.  It's side door opens onto a black and infinite nothing.

Thousands, millions, billions of smaller helicopters, a waterfall of smaller helicopters is flowing out the side like blood.  Every drop of blood, every molecule of blood, is a helicopter, and they are all of them in a race against time to figure out helicoptering before they crash.
