People are paying for an experience, to be made to feel a certain way. Most people want the good feelings, but it seems normal that some would prefer bad feelings. People from traumatic backgrounds would enjoy the familiar nature of something they experienced at a young age as that's what is "normal" for them. It may not make sense, it may be unhealthy, but it causes a pleasurable release of dopamine. The end result is what's sought, whatever gets them that is the preferred experience.
Sure, it's stupid. But so is paying a tithe, prayers, and positive thinking. There's more to finsubs than them just paying for nothing. For socially inept people, they are paying for a familiar social experience. It's healthier to be a finsub than adopting a drug addiction. Yes, it's pointless to people who aren't finsubs, but it has its place and it's not going anywhere.
They're another fine example of the impact of a broken system.
I think it's interesting that in every other case we're talking about dreaming other worlds and perception is reality, but your explanation for a sexual fetish is bio-mechanical and all about the dopamine.
