I've always been baffled by this one

“A warrior knows that he cannot change, and yet he makes it his business to try to change, nevertheless. The warrior is never disappointed when he fails to change. That’s the only advantage a warrior has over the average man.” ~CC
Why would a warrior make it his business to change if he could not? And for that matter, why bother attempting to change, if we cannot?
I think, as ive meditated on this one many times, he meant at the core we stay the same. But everything else changes. Our self importance. we shut down the internal dialog, we erase our personal history. Those things we change. But there is a part of us from birth on that is unchannging and static. This is I believe what he meant. And in our frustration with not being able to change, lol, we laugh, and not be disappointed.

Ha, you just reminded me of this from Alister Crowley...I feel it resembles what you are saying...of which I agree.

THE SORCERER

A Sorcerer by the power of his magick had subdued

all things to himself.

Would he travel? He could fly through space more

swiftly than the stars.

Would he eat, drink, and take his pleasure? there

was none that did not instantly obey his bidding.

In the whole system of ten million times ten million

spheres upon the two and twenty million planes he

had his desire.

And with all this he was but himself.

Alas!

This is superb, and fits in with what don Juan said was the goal, which is NOT to become a Nagual.

One does not "become" a nagual.  It's a configuration of energy which has nothing to do with "becoming".  As for the goal?  Very simply, the goal is to achieve the totality of oneself, to beome the singularity of consciousness which transcends life, death and nagual/tonal.
I-Am.

Gonzo, yes, the ego must be overcome. When there is no ego, one does not care that they aren't anything. One is nothing. It is then they are the nagual. Every person who achieves this becomes the nagual.

Very well put. You achieve the totality of yourself by remembering that you are and always have been the totality of yourself. The reason we don't realize this now is because we have forgotten our true natures and our limitless potential. The only way to remember is to get past the ego through inner-silence and develop a stronger and more reliable connecting link with intent; which is the source of everything that exists. The more we impress the force of Intent, through the right way of living, the more we earn the right to access what we choose manifest in our lives. The wise always seek to manifest good, wholesome and wonderful things with much extra to spare and share.

I believe that what don Juan called "The Tonal" is what most people call the ego. It begins at birth and ends at death. It is made up of everything we can think of that we have experienced in this life. God is a part of the island of the tonal because most people's concept of God is not based on direct experience. It's based on a description that we are supposed to accept on faith. This makes "God" part of the island of the tonal/ego. So the island of the tonal is actually made up of WHAT WE THINK those things are. In fact, everything on the island of the tonal is equal in that it is equally an unfathomable mystery. The tonal has a way of taking the mystery out of everything because we are usually taught by those who have lost the sense of wonder and mystery that life truly is

A true warrior works towards improving himself knowing all the while that he cannot change. Whatever changes he may experience in life are in actuality a gift of the Spirit. The Spirit can choose to accept the offerings of our suffering to change and better ourselves and, if it chooses, will change us as a priceless...gift. So the change that comes to a determined warrior is impossible for it takes a miraculous power to change a true warrior for the better. He accepts his successes and failures as gifts of the Spirit and does his best to always be grateful for the gifts he receives. It is gratitude and integrity that are very pleasing offerings to the Spirit of Intent. Intent is indeed a Sentient Force and must be humbly respected in order to inspire it to enrich our lives with untold wonders!

Yes, I agree. The nagual perception transforms the tonal, makes it magical, which also opens up new possibilities as a result.

I am simply reposting what saceteca writes because it is worthy of emphasis and a good reminder to me. Thanks S.
