Lecture by Carlos Castaneda - phoenix 1993

The Phoenix Book Store - Los Angeles, CA - Lecture by Carlos Castaneda.
DREAMING:
Don Juan said there is no evil and that we can't feel compassion. Is that is feeling sorry for someone else? Does that means I believe I'm better off than they are? It's the ego that feels sorry, and the whole idea of feeling sorry is fraudulent. Use your energy for something else, to free yourself. You save energy by the exercise of recapitulation. Through recapitulation you will come to the place where energy becomes visible. Not by sight but by something incomprehensible. Something that's incomprehensible because we have no lexicon for it. When you see it, you realize you were doing it.
Not Doing is the cognitive dissonance that unentangles your awareness. The disarrangement of the world by doing something absurd. We must realize the world is an arrangement. It could be tying your shoes in a different way.
The dreamer through the teaching of sorcery is a warrior who sees himself as something indescribable, undefinable and open-ended. He has no limitation. No frame. He takes anything that comes as a challenge, and is never a loser even if he is biting the dust.
One of the of the most important things for a warrior to do is to keep an Album of Sublime Moments.
Get out of the brain of the beast. We are repetitious. Where is our sense of pride? We must examine everything, curtail our routines, throw cognitive dissonance into them in order to become a sorcerer. We can see energy as it flows, why permit the brain of the beast to stop us.
The dreamer is capable of using his dreams as a trap door or a spring board into infinity. But we've used our dreams only in analytical, psychological, or scientific ways. To dream as a warrior, is to dreams as one who has taken the responsibility of dying.
Dreams are precise. Something is drawn to fields of luminosity. The assemblage point becomes displaced. Fibers of energy are shooting off in thousands of directions. If the point becomes displaced we move into an entirely different world. Dreaming is the art of maintaining the assemblage point in a new position. If we had the opportunity, we could all become first class Dreamers.
The further we displace the assemblage point the more terrifying the dream. Our mind supplies order on these experiences. When these dreams become overlaid with demonic images. It's the way we anthropomorpize experience. Take Dreaming as a formal enterprise and the demonic disappears. The difficulty is to discipline ourselves so that nothing that happens in the dream will be upsetting.
The steps in dreaming:
Become aware that you are falling asleep.
Before going to sleep say 'I am a Dreamer'. It's a matter of stating your intent. Don't be concerned if you are a Dreamer or not, the mind won't know the difference. It's not lying to yourself. In linear affairs we think of it as lying. That should be nothing new, we lie to ourselves all the time.
So intend Dreaming from the point of view that we are going to die. As if it's a matter of life and death. What are you saving yourself for, senility? Are we waiting to shout "Nurse" in a restaurant? What have they done to you? Don Juan would ask that question of me over and over. It needed to be repeated because I was stupid.
This is not the best of all possible worlds. Something is holding us back from seeing. From the point of view of one who is going to die the warrior becomes aware and the world is never the same. This is incredible. He sees the intruder in his dreams. They are scouts from inconceivable worlds. They use awareness as a sea. We can go anywhere if we have the energy. If we get rid of our self-importance.
A warrior takes leaps of incalculable lengths because he wants to know. My fate is to roam the infinite. We are travelers, traveling is our fate. In accepting the responsibility of his death the warrior gets an incredible boost. He can put an end to his self - importance and move to another level. You don't have to lower your head to anyone.
After finding the intruder in your dreams you can stop the dream and ask it to take you where it comes from. The intruder is compelled to take your awareness to other worlds. Stupendous worlds, a twin universe. The Dreamer then becomes a reconnoiter, a scout himself. The twin universe is alive, it's a world of awareness. The inorganic beings are teachers from a female universe that is in search of males. Women are replicas of inorganic beings on earth.
The battle is in this other world, and we will enter this universe rather we like it or not. It's unavoidable. The sorcerers are pragmatists. (What is exactly is this battle that happens in the other world?) Why wait until you die? Do it now while you are young and vigorous. Stop being so involved with your self importance. Always thinking me, and what I want until were too old to do anything else. Until the only thing we can say is "nurse." Be aware now. This is the moment and dreaming is the way. The Dreamer, having saved enough energy will get the jolt of his life when he enters the other world. It's inconceivable. What are we really? Not what my father told me. We are something else.
There are seven stages to Dreaming. The first is to be aware the you are falling asleep. This is so you will remain conscious during the dream state. Then once in the dreams state and you can hold it as long as you don't stare. Once you begin to awaken in your dreams you will begin to get more energy. You will be stronger the next day.
Become aware in your dreams, this is the first stage. If you don't insist and set up intent your energy will then pull you. Let it happen. The pull of intent will break the parameters of historical perception. If you recapitulate your life seriously, you will get enough energy. Only as warriors can we realize what we are.
In the first stage we examine everything, every element in our dreams. We begin by becoming aware that you are falling asleep. But that's not the goal of the technique. This is only to fool the mind. The real technique is to become aware of the elements of our ordinary dreams.
In dreaming, we can easily shift the assemblage point. Even a slight shift of the assemblage point will create a new person. We are putting an end to the old and becoming a new person.
Don Juan said the "here" and "there" are exchangeable, we do it all the time with our energy bodies. The energy body is the sum total projected out.
What have the done to us to make us so resistant? The terrible damage that society has done to us can be corrected by dreaming.
The next step or Gate of Dreaming is to wake up from the dream in to another dream.
Once you have acquired the energy from recapitulation and dreaming you can lie down in the dream in the same position that you originally fell asleep in and move into another dream. When you enter a dream inside a dream you enter a state that is inconceivable and will blow your mind. This is the secret of the twin positions.
The secret of secrets is to claim it. We only need energy. This is real, not theory, and as a practitioner, I say we all can do it.
Eventually in Dreaming everything will shift. One day your attention becomes arrested or fixed by something in the dream and you don't know why. You won't be able to move until it releases you. You are attention is caught by in inorganic being. They have more awareness than us but we have more energy. We are like powerful bullets of energy that burn brightly. They last forever and their awareness can hold us.
Now we will begin to here the voice of the Emissary. It will answer any questions. When we hear its voice as a woman we are hearing is true voice. It is by nature female.
Don't indulge yourself with the dream Emissary. Tell it to stay out of your affairs. Don't let it feed of you for free.
There is a wave that hits us and we turn it into sadness--But it's from out there? "I never thought I was going to live forever, let's do it. Turn me loose,"
Practice the Not Doing of the album of the sublime. It will create the cognitive dissonance. Create an album to remind you of your sublime moments. Of things and thoughts that have astounded you.
The real revolution is in the next world. It easy to get involved in political protest, but what's the point. Do something for the point of view of a man who is going to die.
What have they done to you? What are you doing to yourself to your body? Look how you live. Stop smoking.
What have they done to you? Our natural heritage is to live and die like morons. This is the time for revolution.

Stupendous worlds, a twin universe. The Dreamer then becomes a reconnoiter, a scout himself. The twin universe is alive, it's a world of awareness.
About three nights ago I had this dream where I met a man who was another awareness, or a fellow dreamer, not sure. But he was a stalker and his intent was masked-maliciousness. He got right up in my face, his face somewhat chubby, black hair cut just above his ears, palish skin and a big cheesy smile. He reminded me of a used car salesman.
I knew at that moment I was dreaming and this time I intended to find out where my dreaming body was. I looked right at him and asked him a leading question, as if I didn't know I was dreaming and was just asking directions to "his town". "Where exactly are we"..or words to that effect. He stepped back and cocked his head at me a certain way and retorted, "Why don't you tell ME. This is your altenate dream universe."
Instantly I knew he was an expert dreamer, or an inorganic being, not sure which. I knew I had to get out of there but I had no bearings on how to return to my body. In other words I sensed the silver cord to my body was being blocked by him and I was in danger of dying. He tried to hold me there. He started asking me to have sex with him. I pulled away..it felt like thick taffy as I finally broke loose and shot into another dream where I was watching a woman who was me when I am older lecturing people on how sex without love is not only futile but actually damaging to the energy body. I breathed a sigh of relief. I truly feel that if I had consented to have sex with that man, I would not be here typing this today. "There is only hope in new knowledge"

Sil, it pays not to be a slutty dreamer.
Like in my thread-"The Dreaming Penis or Vagina"-its best to keep your pants on.

Any dream one remembers is therefore properly DREAMING
Provided of course you do the prerequisite of what Carlos says. Look at the items of your dream until the images dissolve. Best Intent! It's a term that bugs you, I know. But it's important that you exacerbate that part of you until it disentegrates so to speak. The benefits from your dreaming will enhance by doing so. The Recapitulation/Not Doing/Intent/Abelaring/Ancient Knowledge
And others.

seeitall-actually dreaming is the art of moving the assemblage and stalking is the art of maintaining the new position. So the recapitulation,or the stalkers
breath,is a very helpful practice in relation to holding on to the dream.

Adeleon, you mentioned Recapitulation. In your view, how does one practice that?

I've never heard that practice explained. I have my own notions, but I need more clarification.

In "Fourth Way" schools a practice is given and it involves replaying the events of your day backward before going to sleep like watching a movie, or
allowing images to cascade.

Is it the same practice or something different? I find the Fourth Way version helpful as well, fyi, but I don't know if it's the same thing.

Nice post adeleon. Reading this, it struck me that the reason some people can't get their lucid dreams under control is because of a weakness in
stalking. I hear from people all the time that are really good lucid dreamers except that they can never completely "stop" them. They end up
carrying on with characters in their lucid dream as if they never got lucid at all. When I have a lucid dream that is overpowering me, I just yell
"Clear!" and everything goes away. The dream just goes white. Then things will start reapearing, usually inorganic beings first. This makes it
easy to find one. I should change my handle to "stalkways" though as I'm actually not a "dreamer". I remember Don Juan saying that
dreaming ability will subside during periods of thorough recapitulation. Now I can see why. Where did you hear it being called the "stalker's
breath", or is that something you figured out on your own?

The inorganic world is the natural destination for us after death, an inorganic being showed me what it would look like to me after I die, she
called it the "endless earth." All of my family and friends, who have passed away, were there and all the issues that I had with them, when they
were alive, were still fresh and unresolved. So, death is not freedom from all the bullshit on earth, it is just a staging ground for even more bullshit.
Other than that, the place was beautiful and mysterious and endlessly intriguing. I think that once you fell into that place you would never find your way
out.

Hi dreamways,

Can warrior continue his training once s/he ends up in that world?

The infinite earth, what people call the afterlife, is not a sober place, I have not seen how one could continue with any sort of training there. Both the
death defiers and the new sorcerers avoid "landing" there. The old way is to commit and contain your consciousness into a singular "hive"
energy, somehow existing on the fringe of the inorganic realm - it's the best planned and executed method to date. The new sorcerers way is to fly high
across the infinite inorganic sky like a shooting star, dodging the eagle in the process, but the jury is still out on how that works out. If I ever see, hear
or figure out a way to do something after one ends up there, I'll let you know. As for now, it looks like a complete dead end, literally.

It is a death end! Good to have an actual confirmation of it.

Ernest Holmes' Science of Mind, the basis of 'The Secret' says that we go into the next life with the consciousness we achieved in this one.
Christianity claims to bypass that through the forgiveness of Jesus, but I bet there's still a pecking order! Hell, only the dead will really know.

I'll grant Jesus this truth: in one of the Gospels, when asked about marriage in the afterlife , he made it clear that it is not a physical world. Sorry.
No sex there. ( priests, nuns and Toltecs have no sex HERE, and for some of us, that's just our fate, HA!) To me, this gives some substance to the idea
of bypassing the Eagle.

Come to think of it , this forum could use some SERIOUS talk about sex. Hear that Arnway? I said serious , not posturing . Those who get laid don't need
to talk about it, and probably don't dare to.

I am celibate. I gave up. It's fate. Let the Spirit decide.

To go into the unknowable is dangerous.

This is too scary for me

How can I die then ? I mean really DIE, no afterlife, no reincarnation,

no nothing.

That's the first thought that went through my mind when I saw this "final destination". There was one other thing that I was shown
that really freaked me out and I wasn't sure how to talk about it. It's really weird. The "Eagle" isn't after all of our energy for
the afterlife, it sort of "skins" people, it takes the surface energy of the energy-body and wears it, providing your zombie ego with a second chance
at "life". So you basically have all these hollowed out people running around in the inorganic realm that are the remnants of everyone, they have
all of their surface features and personality but nothing else. Sort of like sock puppets that the Eagle plays with. This is how inorganic beings can
impersonate dead people so well, they are wearing their "hides". This is where "ghosts" come from, this is why sorcerers don't want to
end up there. Since most people only know themselves as their mind/ego, this is the sum total reality awaiting them. Supposedly, the Eagle will be satisfied
with a recapitulation instead of your skin - it seems like a fair trade to me.

Think of the all the physical planes (including the inorganic realm) as a giant sheet thrown over everything that is immortal. The the non-physical
"shapes" outlined by the fabric of the physical plane are what reincarnate, they are what are actually alive. The energy-bodies are part of the
physical plane, even the energy-bodies of inorganic beings. So, the real universe and the real life that exists, are in a truly non-physical dimension. An
immortal consciousness, that exists in the non-physical plane, can inhabit both inorganic and physical bodies. It is common for people to confuse inorganic
with non-physical, but they are not the same. In reality, our physical realm is the least physical of all of the physical planes. Inorganic beings exist on a
plane that is more physical and more real than ours. This fact escapes some dreamers until they have spent more time visiting that realm. Non-physical life
does not naturally have a "shell" or "hide" (energy body) to contain it, so it is "magnetically" drawn to merge with the
physical. Those beings, ourselves included, appear as "angels" when not encased in an energy body. Just as in the physical world, the non-physical
world has its own "laws of physics" and natural order to everything. That natural order is what controls reincarnation, or the intermingling of the
two types of realms.

How would the resurrected body as opposed to reincarnated body slip past the knot of the inorganic beings realm. Surely there must be something better to
become aware of after we are dead as a box of hair.

Trees, men, insects, animals, etc, all live differently because their assemblage points are in extremely different positions, or you could say, their
chakras are in very different arrangements. Because they live in a fundamentally different way, energetically speaking, they also die in a different way.
Some types of beings shed their physical bodies but remain virtually unchanged energetically, it isn't magic, it's just the nature and physics of the
expanded dimensions. Here's something you never heard from Castaneda, but it was implied often. What we call our "identity", our personality
and mind, is cultivated on the surface of the energy body, it's the shell of the egg so to speak. Now, all beings have a surface to their energetic
cocoon, but not all of them store their identity or sense of self there, some beings store their minds within the interior of the energy body instead. The
down side of this is that it is harder to develop a sense of self from that position, but, the upside is that it is far less vulnerable to the eagle at death.
It's like the lizard that readily loses its tail to predators so that it may escape to live another day. We don't know that trick, but other beings
do. They lose their "skin" at death, but it contained nothing valuable, so they don't suffer a loss of "self" at death, they lose
something that they didn't plan on keeping anyway. So, the old sorcerers knew this, and followed the examples of the beings whose energy was the most
flexible and least affected by death. That method is what makes them "death defiers." By moving the assemblage points of their dreaming bodies in a
radical fashion, they were able to preserve their sense of self after death, not as "ghosts, but as functioning beings with purpose and a destiny. There
are of course many other "end game" paths besides this one, but this gives you an idea of what such a path might involve.

"the non-physical "shapes" outlined by the fabric of the physical plane " Dreamways can you explain that part further please? It is hard

"Ourselves"? Do we become angels at some point ?.... or just look like angels?...or am I getting it completely wrong?

Quantum physics can fill in alot of the mysteries of the unconscious and conscious mind and help sort out the tonal / nagual perception. I keep this guideline
in mind when speaking or thinking in things that are incomprehensible to the tonal world of solid matter . We have been trained to learned to conclude things
by using our 5 senses . I have come to understand that miracles, healing, mysteries of the unknown are "real" or at least understandable in another
plane~the quantum realm. Jesus was asking his disciples to perceive this quantum realm so to view this world in a different light.

In the Gospel of Thomas ,Jesus said to his disciples, " I shall give you what no eye has seen and what no ear has heard and what no hand has touched and
what has never occurred to the human mind."

~Material realm~
