If this is all a dream...

How does one go about dislodging from one realm and aligning another? That sounds a lot like freedom to me.

It does! But that's what the lobster thought when they threw him in the water!!! Seroiusly, if one achieves the second attention at will, this can happen at death. Otherwise visits are the possibilities available.

Here comes the bullshit answer.

sleep is what hunters do at night when they dont have an artificial lightsource with which to hunt.
sleep is the way to conserve energy so as to still have something left by morning to hunt again.
Originally there wernt many humans
the earth is spherical and has both day and nighttime.
the at some point there were enough humans to have them on every corner of the globe.
and while 95% slept at night there were 95% of the people on the other side of the globe hunting in the sunlight
the footsteps of the hunters while we slept making a very real environmental other to our sleeping selves.

this wave of sleep used to travel in time with the day and nighttime..
demarcating a majority effect in any particular timezone
but now we have THE METROPOLIS which has 24hr lighting and 24 hr industry.
and these metropolis are all around the globe.
so that while you sleep even if it is nightime
chances are that on the other side of the world many nightshift workers and partyers are also asleep at the same time.
and that the metropolis, no matter which continent it is in has a  parralel dimesnional  link to other metropolis
and all have sleeping people.

gradually our world has gone from being half in darkness
to beinglit electricly for 24hrs a day
within which people sleep.

to answer the original question.
we only need sleep because it facillitates a form of unity within the habitual position
and were the habitual position to move , we would not need to sleep.
