People should be encouraged and assisted in their development of self. It's no easy task trying to wade through all the bullshit in our tonal lives. Hand-holding and coddling are necessary for people to find self-realization.
Oh, wait.
That doesn't sound quite right. What is hand-holding and coddling anyway? It's walking in front of people with a flashlight and playing tour guide. I, for one, have always wanted to hold the flashlight, unless of course I was planning to ambush the guide when something scary popped up in the darkness. In those cases I happily pass over the flashlight rights.
People are intelligent creatures. Give them enough space and time to accomplish their agenda and they will. Rush them before they're ready and it won't matter if you're the warden holding open their unlocked jail cell door. Some simply enjoy being enslaved. I feel for them. Being controlled and enslaved is such a rush. No requirement for critical thinking skills. Every civilization needs sheeple.
When they come stumbling out into the light (or darkness) all you have to really do is be there. Say hello. Show them they're not alone in the madness.
Presence is enough to inflict change. No preaching required.
