One of my teachers expounds:
So it is good that we get together, and it’s good that we continually have questions and answers. This is all a part of helping to understand. But please don’t forget that my job is to corner you. That’s my responsibility as a teacher, to corner you, to help you put yourself in a place where you cannot escape having the experience you don’t want to have. But I cannot control you in any way, and so the success of this aspect of my responsibility as a teacher depends upon your understanding and agreement. Your job, your responsibility as a student, is to put yourself willingly in a place where you can be cornered.
Some students understand how this works for them and are willing to participate in their own awakening in this way. But some of them run like hell as soon as they feel that they are about to get cornered. “Run like hell” doesn’t necessarily mean to run from the room. It is more likely that a student like that just shuts me out. “I’m not going to be put in that position. I am not going to have that experience.” And that is fine, of course. Whatever you want is what you get. But if you have that resistance, and you are still attending classes, it’s going to feel to you like the teacher is trying to control you. But the teacher, as I often remind you, is, in this case, just the part of you that wants you to wake up.
There is no external force trying to control you. The resistance you feel is not towards the teacher, but to your own inner nature. As far as I am concerned, you can leave any time you want to. No one is forcing anything on you. But please understand that you take whatever your condition is with you wherever you go.”
So I would like to ask everyone, who or what is it that’s cornered you?
What formal training do you have?
Zen, martial arts, Yoga, Buddhism, Nagualism, as just a few examples.
If you’ve something a bit more abstract that’s teaching you, such as The Spirit, or The Nagual or writings by Gurdjieff or some other author, that’s great as well. If you could though, please detail it out as much as possible. What are you really being shown? Are you learning something new or just an awakening from within? All of the above?
My snip above is from my Sensei’s Sensei in Aikido. He’s very philosophical and love to talk and write. My immediate Sensei is a ‘grind the stone’ type. Explains minimally, lets you figure it out for yourself. I’ve related to others that at times I feel similar to don Juan with the Naguals Julian and Elias. It’s worked out right fine
What’s your experience and what’s it shown you?
