The essence of pride is division. It's self-reliance made a psychological trait. The basic attitude of pride is "I don't need you nor anybody else" and so on.
Truth of the matter is nobody lives separated and 100% self-sustained in the universe. We rely on several things that are around us.
Pride is either good or bad depending on the given context. If you are fucked up, mangled and in general miserable, pride will keep you alive. Is the essence of self-importance: We sustain a facade of pride as a survival mechanism. Then being proud actually helps you, gives you the endurance you lacked before to find your way out of your situations.
But once you find your way, once you found your haven, your peace, your joy, your bliss... pride becomes a burden, a barrier. Pride yells "See... I did it. *** ya all! I don't need you."
And while we have our little haven, we are isolated. We have ourselves and a loved few and that's it. We are deliberately ignoring the rest of the world, the rest of the universe, the places that are unpleasant, ugly, disturbing. Part of us refuses to see the rest, because there is something truly ugly about ourselves and people around us reminds us of it.
Pride is healthy, and what we earned is ours and well deserved, but is that all there is to it?
A naturalist named Christopher Johnson McCandless aka Alexander Supertramp wrote as he died alone in the wilderness, having lived what was for him a life of freedom and pleasantries roaming the earth seeking adventure:
'Happiness Only Real When Shared'
So be happy, be joyful, be ecstatic... live fully, but remember: what you wanted and earned for yourself, is all that all the doofuses and fools in the world want for themselves as well. Most of them are closed to those options, they are too engrossed or suffering to intensely to discern A from C, but some are willing to seek them.
Once, perhaps not in this life-time, we were as dumb as them. Perhaps even worst. And someone, or a group of people, made us aware of the possibility of growing beyond our stupidity.
Let us return the favor to those who helped us to grow by helping others who want to grow. By helping others, we can transcend our pride and expand our awareness more than we could possible imagine.
I speak from experience on this matter. I had no help. No help I could use. I was given pointers. I was told the obvious 100 times. I was disregarded and ignored. Nothing worked, no matter what I did.
But when after failing for the thousand time I said "Ok Spirit, let's make a deal. I help your sons, you help me." it happened. I never thought it would work as it did. I started to heal. So I continued. And now I'm healing more.
Soon enough, I'll be cured. And this can be your case too, if you want it.

ride holds us back from helping others. I've come to a wonderful conclusion recently... those who are the most generous with themselves are also the most selfish! Includes God, mother Teresa, Budda, whatever. They are the most selfish and their happiness comes from their love of helping others, CUZ IT HELPS THEMSELVES.
