Zen and martial arts
#1
Hello Lobsters
I just wanted to let you know that the Budos (the traditionnal martial arts) in Japan, were created by the founder of zen Boddhidarma. Yes the great Damo (as called by the chinese), is the source of all martial arts today. So the fouder of zen, spread martial arts thru asia, and then his monks spread it even more. This created even more variations in the styles.
Damo learned martial arts in India, but he also created the famous 5 style animal kung fu, after a legendary 9 year meditation in a cave. Damo was the monk who brought Shaolin kung fu to the Shaolin monks.
So its easy to see why spirituality goes hand in hand with martial arts. The great Boddhidarma was a master at both.
It is said he could fight off 10 shaolin monks at a time. Even though he was 100 years old, had heart problems and was a little over weight.

Here is a painting I did, inspired from zen art.

BT, Very nice painting!
I was researching the origins of Zen today, and one of the theories I came across was that Zen may have originated at Shaolin temple.
Bodhidharma was a Prince from South India, where Mahayanist teachings are said to have originated.
But, who really knows where or how Zen originated?  Most of it is the stuff of legend.
