Ka'iulani, the Princess
#1
Ka'iulani once dreamed of marrying for love and not solely for duty. Love can be weird. Those in positions of power often marry to combine two kingdoms. Not for personal preference. Ka'iulani was in the same predicament as other rulers.

She wrote on this topic and it caused her some uncertainty. Given her status she had to censor herself. Her writing and spoken words. She was educated, articulate, and very loving. She wanted to do well by her family, her kingdom, and her people. But my impression from her writings is that she wore many hats Smile figuratively and literally as she fancied English hats which were very fashionable in London at the time.

Sure, she was a Princess. She was also a human being. By the end of it she admitted she would marry to ensure the success of her kingdom. But that wasn't her preference.

If she had lived past her 20s and the kingdom wasn't overthrown I like to think she could find a way to make both needs a reality.

I wonder if in a subsequent lifetime if she eventually got her wish.

Also, her best friend was Mr. Stevenson. A famous writer at the time. Still is, I like to think. He entertained her silliness, understanding the human behind the crown. They enjoyed friendly discussions on many topics. Both being literary intellectuals. Moreso him than her. She was busy feeding her peacocks in the royal garden...and doing other princessy things.

I wonder if she ever found Mr. Stevenson in a later life. What he might look like in a new century, new body, and with a new brain.

What would she look like? Be like?

Would either remember the other or themselves?

Do we wind up bumping into people we held strong connections with from a past life?

I feel like the simple answer is no. That's impossible.

But is it?

I've heard of weirder sht happening. Like MILABS. Or the book 1984. Now the Space Force. Who are we fighting in space?! Lol.

Robert Louis Stevenson

To Princess Kaiulani
From Songs of Travel

[Written in April to Kaiulani in the April of her age; and at Waikiki, within easy walk of Kaiulani's banyan! When she comes to my land and her father's, and the rain beats upon the window (as I fear it will), let her look at this page; it will be like a weed gathered and pressed at home; and she will remember her own islands, and the shadow of the mighty tree; and she will hear the peacocks screaming in the dusk and the wind blowing in the palms; and she will think of her father sitting there alone. - R. L. S.]

Forth from her land to mine she goes,
The island maid, the island rose,
Light of heart and bright of face:
The daughter of a double race.

Her islands here, in Southern sun,
Shall mourn their Kaiulani gone,
And I, in her dear banyan shade,
Look vainly for my little maid.

But our Scots islands far away
Shall glitter with unwonted day,
And cast for once their tempests by
To smile in Kaiulani's eye.

The heart remembers what the mind often forgets.

That is why we might feel things we don't fully comprehend or remember.

Mr. Stevenson became a close friend to the royal family. He was very loved by them.

I believe a love like that persists over lifetimes. Even if bodies and minds are a little different each time.

As an aside, the princess allied up with the devil and she wasn't corrupted by it.  She clearly was already corrupted before they got together.

Way to go Netflix! I <3 you maker of the bestest shows.
