Nagual originates from the term nahualli usually referring to a person with magical powers or practicing sorcery. It also happens to refer to the animal spirit of a certain human after the birth date using Tonalpohualli or Tzol'kin for the first derives from the second as it remained preserved orally amongst the meso-american inhabitants. For they were mostly hunters - gatherers and lived in harmony with the nature just as early civilisations everywhere. Important to such calendar is mostly that it also may help calculate the date of a conception, for it represents human gestation. Opinions as it derives form dark magical practices and dark sorcerers is not accurate but people usually fear what they do not know or understand do not even try to see if they are right or wrong. Yet most discoveries on this path were made by those that used magic in the wrong way, well if you can get something easy regardless of what why should you bother take the long hard way basic human psychology.
People want out of nagualism retty much they seek it out for the same basic reason, mostly for it seems another way to be "better" or above the rest, since Carlos Castaneda made it public it gathered many followers. Kinda the twisted version of superman and wonderwoman available to all, especially if it helps get a nice long life with energy body's energy preserved, which will automatically lead to maintaining a healthy physical body as consequence.
But as it is a strange path like all the others many read it some understand it yet almost none lives it so at the and is just another major bshit. The spirit, the nagual, the eagle, the world itself destroyes the reality and sometimes even the life of those that search nagualism for the wrong purpose. Humans normally react to it depending on their basic personality which is consequence of their energy body's configuration some must be lured then left alone to manage and fight some must be tended to. There are only for basic human types and the books Carlos wrote address all of them in different passages , he spoke to everyone every type of humans not really thinking about having tons of followers but because it was his task, his destiny, his meaning, his reason to exist on this planet.
Afterlife oh yes, humans aspiration since the dawn of time well if we screw this one up we reincarnate and make it all better, this is what a friend told me he is on another knowledge path i will not discuss here some yrs ago. What a change from the old already well known path of Christianity so they become even more interesting " better" the "Lambs" of god the nice ones from Jesus's flock. Well being nice and kind is so past date, do whatever have no regrets in case it does turn out crappy you reborn no more heaven no more hell no demons burning you for being naughty. Yet what comes out from the book it is that never once the teacher Don Juan dis-considers other paths he actually recognizes their merit and skills that may develop as consequence of real heartfelt practice. Always discourages young Carlos's "leave it on another day" attitude such he calls him "Insolent immortal creature" and asks him to act now for there is no tomorrow you screw up today it won't be one. There are no bad guys no good guys either you follow the spirit or you don't which second alternative will mean the end of everything you have thus death sooner or later, mortal death you did all in vain for the eagle does not give second chances you lost one farewell, you will get another chance reborn you start a new one. I prefer this one and now, i do not seek anything out of nagualism to be honest since for me it worked, i just hope i can live with it for it changed me to the core of my being.
