So i am walking through the wood and i find a freshly cut tree stump..
i count backward through its concentric rings with my fingertips..
noting that at so and so time i was born..or hey look the first world war
or the eruption of krakatoa..
i can do this with a whole forest of tree stumps if i choose...
i could travel the country or the world inspecting forestry operations
and observing the age of trees in the record of their lignin rings.
each stump a funnel in time.
if all these trees have been cut this year..
and i am to step back just 1 year in recapitulation..
every single tree is whole.. (correct?)
or recapitulate back 10 years and a multitude more trees displace my palm
from aimlessly counting the record of their life....
The truth is that in retrospect.. at the time..
the trees were whole..
just as the people who died since the millenium
were whole before the millenium.
recapitulation should take into account the exact
life quotient that surrounded us "then"

I sometimes dream of a friend who died in 2006
but when i do.. i am dreaming of talking to him in 2003
so if i see a cut tree stump.. i SHOULD..
1) place my palm on its cut surface and count back its rings..
2) place my palm on its cut surface and should i recapitulate
i should see various false perceptions of my hand and wrist
broken away from the stump by the record of its life.
i.e. i cannot interfere with a trees totality just by laying my hand accross its stump
there is only one world tree or so they say.
