Yeah, that's part of it for sure. 

You've got the comfort of consensus..."we will all gather together in the village with our warriors brandishing sharp pointed sticks and built some walls...all that stuff we agree upon that protects us from lions and makes us feel safe". 

And you've got the utility of consensus...."let's take all those sharp pointy sticks and use group stalking tactics and our agreed upon knowledge of lion behavior to take the fight to the lion, instead of waiting for it to bring the fight to us.  And, anyways....Karl here likes the taste of lion"
