Yes, yes I do find it hard to explain to some people why anyone would go through all the trouble.
You've given a pretty comprehensive list. I can't really add much to it right now except to say that my experiences in dreaming have let me see future events one a handful of occasions. So "seeing the future" would be the only one I could think of adding.
