I considered leading with The Last Samurai, but frankly I didn't see it; and suspect I wouldn't care much for movies like that, or 300, or even Braveheart, which I did see.
I don't understand why Braveheart did so well at the box office. It was released at about the same time Liam Neeson's Rob Roy was released.
The former was more commercially successful. I think the latter was substantially the better movie (albeit not much of a war movie, still, with conflict, desperate human drama, etc.).

If you expect a bloodbath extravaganza, you'll be disappointed.
First Blood isn't as much about war as it is about society, and how we treat our heroes.
WWII was kind of black & white. Not just the newsreels of the era, but the white hat / black hat aspects of it as well.
First Blood is the opposite. It's about subtleties. It's about force multiplication. It's about intention vs result.
It's about police authority vs police power, and more.
And there's some very nice though brief helicopter flying in it.
Trivia:
Early in the movie a car leaps a railroad grade and gets airborne.
During the shooting of that scene, the stunt driver's back was broken. But reportedly they kept that scene in.
One other note, for now.
Stallone claims to be afraid of heights.
It's an interesting piece of trivia that may come into play as you watch the movie.
