"Consider installing a Fender LSR roller nut, if you're a heavy whammy bar user, or just don't like the looks of the string tees on the headstock. This installation isn't just restricted to Fender guitars, it can be adapted to any guitar with with an inch and eleven sixteenths nut width, or close.
The beauty of the roller nut design is its simplicity. Each string is suspended atop two ball bearings. The ball bearings don't necessarily move, rather they provide a small, slick, contact patch for the string to slide over.
What I'm going to attempt to do here is show you the easiest way to install one of these. Meaning I'm going to use some real basic tools, and methods, to install the roller nut. I'm sure there are folks with all kinds of fancy tools, who could do the job faster, and easier. But that defeats the purpose, you don't want to spend more on tools than the roller nut itself, which by the way, can be found all over ebay for around forty bucks.

The picture on the right shows the tools you'll need to perform this installation. Many of these you probably already have. Note the file, I purchased this at Walmart for Seven Bucks. You don’t need a cordless Milwaukee hammer drill either, any drill will do with a 1/16" bit.

OK, First things first, remove the strings from the headstock of your guitar. The next step is up to you, I removed the neck from the guitar body, but if you’re not comfortable doing that, simply wrap the body with a clean towel and tape up.
Using a utility Knife and a sharp blade, carefully score all the way around the nut. This ensures that you won’t take any wood with you when you remove the nut.

Get your screw driver and a small tack hammer. Place the screwdriver against the nut and give it a gentle strike. It’s advisable to have someone hold the headstock while doing this. If no one’s around place the headstock up against a wall with a clean towel, clamp it, or just do what I do, wing it and hit the thing. The nut is held into place with a very small amount of glue. It will come out easily.

All right, this is what you have left with the nut gone. Wild huh ?, now you know how Lance Armstrong feels. As a foot note this nut removal process is pretty much the same on any guitar with a bone/plastic nut.

Take the directions out of the package along with the roller nut. Be careful not to lose the two small screws. The additional piece is not used unless your replacing a Wilkinson nut that was installed on some older Strats. With a small machinists ruler, which I neglected to show in the picture, measure the nut slot depth. Per the instructions, on each edge of the fretboard, you want to be .105 inches down. If you’re shallow file out the pocket, if you’re deep there are small shims included with the kit.

Lay the roller nut in the existing pocket, and mark each end of the roller nut toward the guitar body. We need to remove .094" of material toward the guitar body to get the nut to fit. Once you’ve marked each side of the fretboard, lay your machinists ruler between the two marks and gently score with a knife. This step is probably not necessary but it isn’t a horrible idea.
Once the fretboard is scored, tape to the score line with a double helping of masking tape. Tape to the center of the score line to be conservative.

Once you get down to the proper depth make sure you're still strait down. You can see in the picture to the left that I had to file towards the body a little.

It’s not a bad idea to try the nut in the groove. A snug fit is really the most desirable. Once you get the nut to snugly seat all the way to the bottom, it’s time to drill the holes. Remember to tape the bit so that you don’t go too deep.

With the holes drilled remove the roller nut, blow away the saw dust, and give the edges of the nut pocket a really light sand with some 220 grit paper. Your pocket should look something like this. Now insert the nut and carefully install the two screws provided with the kit. I’d suggest a little bees wax or soap on the threads.

With the roller nut seated tightly measure for proper reveal, and your done.
As a footnote here’s a few things you should do once the nut is installed. Once you’ve re stringed the guitar check that the intonation is still right. You may also remove the string tees, and fill the string tee holes. If you do remove the tees, and don’t have locking tuners, make sure you add a few extra turns of wire to the tuner posts. Good Luck J."

I intend to memorize this to the point where I can do it in my sleep while blindfolded!
Lucky for me I saved all the photos
and created a document with those photos and instructions
in a word processing file because...

THE WEB PAGE IS NO MORE!!!!!

So, is this a sign from the Spirit that I should not install the new neck nut?

I DON'T FUCKING KNOW!!!

and it REALLY pisses me off not being able

to properly interpret this omen!!!

Glued and clamped now wait til tomorrow night

Not as perfect as it should be, but

The most important thing is the alignment at the top of the headstock

Well, Monoprice FINALLY got their black Route 66 Les Paul's in stock

I just ordered one for $139.00. This is a deal that can't be beat!!!

I've decided it's a good Idea to alternate between guitars to minimize fret wear

Heck, if the frets wear out it will cost me more than the guitar to replace them!

I've been thinking about something here
I ordered the Monoprice California classic Fender Stratocaster copy guitars in both black and white
They should arrive TODAY whether I like it or not
The black one was on a July 4th 2014 sale for $69.00

The new locking tuners I tried to install on the Fender Starcaster guitar,
which resulted in my breaking the headstock of the neck
COST MORE THAN THE BLOODY MONOPRICE GUITAR!!!!

I think it would be wise of me to postpone any more work on the Starcaster
until AFTER I test out the Monoprice California classic guitars

I am still within my 30 days and can still send all the EXPENSIVE guitar upgrading hardware
back to Amazon and get a full refund for the purchase price

Just one of the pickguards with the famous Fat 50s Stratocaster pickups on it
costs more than both Monoprice California Classic guitars put together

(minus shipping)

and I purchased TWO of them. One in black and one in white

The way I feel right now, I don't even want to hear how those Fat 50s pickups sound
Personally, these guitars are only going to be used for honoring Jimi Hendrix

Stratocasters are great guitars, but I like the Les Paul sound much better
Plus I like the feel of the Les Paul much better
Fact of the matter is Fender Stratocaster guitars are simply
not very good for playing jazz

Rock, Country, Blues, R&B, but NOT jazz

I like the Les Paul because it's great for EVERY style of music!

Why spend a lot of money 'hot-rodding' Stratocaster copy guitars
when I don't really like Stratocaster guitars except to look at?

I have no regrets gluing the headstock of the Fender Starcaster
I may decide to put the old tuners back on it and have it as a spare guitar

This is how easy I expected installing the locking tuners on the Fender Starcaster would be

The fucking joke's on me!!!

NEW COOL TRICK!!!

Push the whammy bar a little then give it a slight pull

before tuning the guitar

When done properly a slight pull should result in bringing the guitar

back in tune after using the whammy bar!

Never knew this before!!!

TO THE MONOPRICE COMPANY

Hi Guys!!!

Both my California Classics arrived yesterday. I just got through doing a full setup on the white one.
Oh my God!! You've done it again!!! This California classic spins so many rings around the Fender STARCASTER
Stratocaster copy it is beyond ridiculous!!!

I bought the Starcaster to look at, not to play. It's cream colored and it looks great
and it sounds pretty good too

HOWEVER

Those cheap tuners kept the guitar chronically out of tune. It was very frustrating!!

True to Route66 form. Your tuners on the California classics are EXCELLENT!!!!
Sweet, smooth, accurate and very, very nice!

The big joke is I thought I would be refusing the package for the white CC guitar

BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!

Refuse it??? I'm tempted to buy another one!!!!

These CC guitars are especially for Jimi Hendrix tribute playing.
I will do other things with them, but they are ESPECIALLY to honor the spirit of Jimi Hendrix

So, the black one is now called: The CC Rider Hendrix

and the white one is called: The Angel Hendrix

My extra black Route 66 should be arriving today!!

I realize now that, considering the price of the guitars, it makes no sense
spending money on a fret job, when they finally need it. So, it's better
to alternate between guitars to minimize fret-wear

I realize now that is why I bought two CCs and two Route66

Still, my sunburst Les Paul will not be neglected either!

Photo I took of my Sunburst Les Paul enclosed

Thanks for being a dream come true place to buy fantastic guitars

at fantastic prices!!!

TO THE MONOPRICE COMPANY:

Hi Again!

As I stated, I bought the cream white Fender Starcaster guitar to look at. I didn't intend to play it.
It reminds me of what my actual Fender Stratocaster used to look like when I first bought it.

However, lately I've been going through a Jimi Hendrix tribute feeling that is difficult to describe.

I think it has something to do with how fantastic YouTube is for learning how to play guitar like Jimi Hendrix

Or Eric Clapton

Or Jimmy Page

Or on how to keep your Stratocaster in tune

Or all kinds of great things to learn!!

YouTube is a dream school for those who really want to learn. I don't have time to read as many books
as I would have to in order to learn the things I can learn from YouTube videos

Anywho, where was I? Oh yeah!! It seems the Fender company did not want their Starcaster copy
to stack up to their thousand-dollar Stratocaster guitars. YOU GUYS have no such restraint

These guitars of yours are so fine at a price that is out of this friggin world!!

I'm flabbergasted. I don't know what else I can say? Besides...

Thanks and keep up the great work!!!

MY COMMENT:

Wow! Awesome. Honestly, when I first saw her I didn't think she could teach an advanced guitarist anything worth learning. Then she played Clapton Cream Lead guitar as though she could have replaced him in the studio during the original recording! Mind blowing, baby, and I'm not easy to impress!!

Here's the thing: To us seasoned guitarists those original lead breaks on the original recordings are like "Holy Grail" sacred stuff. Not so to Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page or many of the others who originally authored them. I've seen videos of them performing live and their lead breaks change EVERY TIME!!! Those lead breaks were captured forever in an inspired moment.

When guitarists scientifically slow those parts down and teach them it is quite an experience for advanced guitarists like myself. It's like looking into the proverbial 'Holy of Holies' of classic rock guitar. You peer in wonder, "So that's how it's done!!!"

Hey, I know it takes a hell of a lot of work to get to the point of being able to teach those licks slowly. Thank you so very much for your gift to us!
