In any of the castaneda books, does he ever mention or use the word meditation or trance?
I cant help thinking that when don juan talked about dreaming or dreams, perhaps in some aspects he was talking about being in a trance or meditation type
state and more importantly how he got himself into that state.
any help is appreciated

to silence the inner dialogue is the same as a deep state of meditation.
There are different ways to get to that. I can't remember if DJ ever gave a method how to do it.
I use the zen way of counting breaths and sitting still for loooong time and it started to work after some years of practice.
If you walk long time in silence in a quiet place - desert or mountain it might bring you to a trance and inner silence.

Thanks morning son,
I guess the book is more about what to do once you reach that trance or meditation state of mind?
So perhaps the first step is really mastering getting to a meditation or trance like state of mind, so perhaps the art of dreaming shouldnt be the first book
to read, maybe I should read up on mastering silencing my mind first, and if so, is there a castaneda book that covers that? or anything you can recommend?
I have actually heard about the counting/breathing method to meditation, is there anything you can recommend?
any help is appreciated

Try drumming...highly recommended, especially the CD that comes with Michael Harner's book on shamanism.

Dancing works well for me as does walking with intent to experience spirit/nature, sitting under particular trees, certain kinds of play...

Its funny you recommended drumming, My friend who was with me today when the crow landed, he showed me an app for his iphone he downloaded that was native
drumming from a tribe in mexico and the app had a little history and explained it came from a catholic church that went on to explain how paganism was mixed in
somehow from that tribe (it started with a Y), all this after I was discussing my dream research and meditation the other day, interesting coincidence.
