Let's begin with the actual definition from http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionar...ndenceFull Definition of DEPENDENCE1
: the quality or state of being dependent; especially : the quality or state of being influenced or determined by or subject to another
2
: reliance, trust
3
: one that is relied on
4
a : drug addiction ~~~
Now that that's out of the way, some forms of dependency are necessary. For example, let's say you're contained to a wheel-chair and need to climb a mountain. Then yes, at this point in life you can't do it under your own power, for whatever reason. Can't climb it yourself, muscle tone too weak, energy too low, haven't mastered teleportation yet, or any other reason.
So you get a friend, enemy, gorilla, rope, plane, something to help you ascend it. You are dependent on whatever you use. It's understandable. We all experience a form of dependency every now and then. Not a big deal.
However what about if we're capable of doing it ourselves? Should we still be dependent on something besides ourselves? Guess it depends on the person.
The other question is, should you allow others to be dependent on you when they aren't confined to that wheel-chair. Guess that depends on the person as well.
Unnecessary dependency leads to weakness. For example, emotional or spiritual dependency creates a horde of zombies as your followers. If you do not teach them how to think for themselves, then they will continually seek reassurance from outside sources in order to do all sorts of things such as; validate themselves or to determine which perception to utilize.
Now, don't get wrong. I'm fond of a league of followers just as much as the next Domme. It is fabulous to have people desiring my attention, hanging on my every word, sending waves of loving intent to me. Everyone should know what it feels like to be a God or Goddess (or both!). It's a grand experience.
On the other hand, who wants followers who cannot think for themselves. I sure don't. I want to be adored with free-will, by intelligent individuals. Not by zombies who can (and eventually will be) snatched up by a more competent Domme than myself.
All that being said, it might be useful to consider why somebody would want followers to be dependent on them. Oftentimes we don't realize we're very needy ourselves. Just as people NEED to surrender their will to someone they admire, there will be someone who will NEED to be admired. It's not a bad relationship by any means. After all, I NEED my television and the cable stations NEED my money. It's a desired exchange.
Oh wait. Do I really NEED TV? What does that exchange bring me, how does it enhance my life. Do I know? Do I care? Am I aware?
If you're happy with what you've manifested thus far, then obviously you are aware. I should mention too, just because people are happy doesn't mean life is perfect. There's a subtle difference between happiness and perfection.
If you find yourself stressed out, complaining a lot, feeling extremely dissatisfied with what's unfolding around you, perhaps you could use just a smidge more awareness in your life. After all, we all are the masters of our universe. You create your world, enjoy it.
