In broad terms there are basically three approaches towards awakening:
The Path of Action/Practice, where one does all kinds of things as a form of attention and energy manipulation away from the tonal.
The Path of Devotion, where one uses sentiments and emotions as a way of taking attention away from tonal.
The Path of Understanding, where ones uses discrimination between truth and false a way of taking the attention away from the tonal.
There is a so-called Fourth Way, or the Way of the Sly Man, aka Integral Yoga, etc, etc. In short, one uses everything available that serves the purpose at hand: to take attention away from the tonal.
Have you noticed what's the connecting notion behind all approaches? I wish this question was not necessary...
