After hearing complains about people Bankei zenji said: 'But these
are all from memory about the person; these are not things about the
person that we perceive at the moment, but things about the person we
remember. How judgmental that memory is!'

But memory is also a good thing. Its how friends recognize each other and what they like about each other, its what alerts us to a person who may be out to harm us, it has functional purposes, memory. Its a bit extreme to say its judgmental when none of us could avoid remembering each other. I know what that statement was getting at though, to say we are not any fixed thing, which is true, but we still have things we keep for a while in intent and memory that make up "personalities" of ourself and others.
Like the Buddha is remembered for his good qualities, otherwise we would not recognize them as attributable to him, or the Dali Lama...these are just memories but serve a functional purpose.
