And they have this milder kind of collective guilt, like they sent troops into Afghanistan too but not because it was their idea.

I'm so grateful I don't live in your limited reality. Yes, physical science supports your stance. If, by chance, there is a nonphysical reality then the same laws might not apply. Consciousness is nonphysical. Physical laws may prove a bit wonky when applied to nonphysical circumstances.
