i know this isn't an herb, but i've had success with binaural beats when i need a jumpstart.
im a purist really.... so even though i know it works, i dont do it unless im starting to feel really off-balance from lack of dreaming.
my method has been to download the beats from the internet to my ipod. then, i use the wake-back-to-bed method, which is very successful for me without any "helpers" in the first place. i get up around four am, stay awake for fifteen minutes, and then when i go back to bed, i use the beats on my headphones. after about half an hour or so, i shut it off and go to sleep. works very well, but like i said.... the WBTB method works so well for me anyway that i hardly ever use them unless its been a long time and i feel "off". the thing i don't like about them is they work by bringing your bran into an alpha state and then down into theta - and it goes back and forth like that. it has a tendency to make me feel kind of nauseous and very ungrounded in my dreaming, not to mention that the entrainment works so well that it becomes a momentum that pulls me out of the dream on its own. i can stay in the dream much longer without them, so i prefer not to use them.
the things that i feel have worked best for me are: adopting a habit of daily meditation, getting plenty of sleep, having a strong intent for what i want to specifically do in my dream, and talking out loud to the inorganic beings.
